Harry Kane should return for Spurs
But will Tottenham’s star man start? The England captain is the first name on the teamsheet for Spurs when fully fit, but hasn’t played since an ankle ligament injury suffered against Manchester City on April 9. Kane will be determined to play in arguably the most important night in the club’s history. Whether he will be ready to start in a game of such intensity is another matter. Boss Mauricio Pochettino says it is a decision he is giving a lot of thought because he knows it could define the game.
Even if Kane does play, Liverpool’s defence, marshalled by Premier League player of the year Virgil Van Dijk, will feel ready for him. Van Dijk has been a colossus this season and helped his side keep a clean sheet against Barcelona – including Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez – in the semi-final second leg. He also played against Kane twice in the league this season, when the forward failed to find the net.
The full backs will be crucial
Liverpool’s energetic fullbacks have been a feature of its thrilling season. Trent Alexander-Arnold, at right-back, and Andrew Robertson, on the left, are aggressive in defence and produce consistently excellent deliveries for their attackers. In the semi-final victory over Barcelona, both played their part. Robertson made it clear his side were up for the fight by ruffling Messi’s feathers early on, while Alexander-Arnold’s quick-thinking from a corner setup his side’s winning fourth goal.
